Chinked System Log Homes & Dovetail Log Work

Chinked System Log Homes

The beauty of chinked structures is often overlooked in favour of the technical skill and craft that typifies well built scribe-fit log work.

However, chinked log buildings offer great flexibility in design and a wide variety of visual interest.

Chinked structures are usually not scribed along the laterals of the logs; tight notches and dowelling maintain the integrity of the structure, while the open laterals are insulated with a backer rod then sealed and finished inside and out with a modern, synthetic flexible mortar that can expand or contract as the logs swell or shrink with the seasons. Chinked buildings can use round or squared timbers, saddle notch or dovetail. Dove tailed corners are particularly attractive in this style of building.

Dovetail Joinery

We use the dovetail notch with both chinked system and scribed structures. An excellent solution for tight corners, both interior and exterior, where log extensions can impede movement.

Many of our scribe-fit log homes incorporate some dovetail work.
