Dovetail Log Homes & Chinked System Log Homes
Dovetail log joinery lends itself both traditionally and logically to chinked system construction. The chink line adds visual interest and balances the impact of large diameter logs.
Historically dovetail log work is more commonly seen on the eastern side of the continent; and there are some fine examples in Quebec and in the Appalachian areas. Happily, for us - who love and specialize in this style of construction, the log home market is becoming aware of this option in log home construction. Quite flexible in design when built as a chinked system building, a dovetail structure can incorporate extremely massive logs which, (in our opinion), are enhanced by an adzed or rusticated surface.
While dovetail log work evokes an old-style impression and mood, it adapts well to both formal and contemporary designs, readily accommodating complex floor plans and more easily incorporating window and door openings than scribed log work.
We typically flatten and adze both the interior and exterior log walls of our dovetail buildings. The wood we use for this type of construction begins with a diameter of 16 to 18", allowing us a 10 to 12" wall thickness.
At Nicola LogWorks, our crew gets mighty excited about dovetail log homes. Go ahead – make our day!
